New features for iBizify.net Web Platform customers

It’s been a year since the last major iBizify.net Web Platform update.  Last year’s update was a mammoth upgrade and we hope you are continuing to enjoy the many benefits of iBizify.net’s web services that are included in your single low-cost annual subscription.  Want a reminder of all that good stuff?  Visit https://blog.ibizify.net/post/New-benefits-and-features-for-iBizifynet-customers

We are pleased today to announce the availability of version four of the iBizify.net Web Platform (formally iMakeMe).  The Web Platform powers your website 24/7 ensuring your customers receive the experience they deserve.

The new release of the software has been completely re-written from the ground up using modern technologies and techniques that deliver numerous benefits:

Social sharing and blogging tools

Previously, as one added new news items, older ones would be pushed further down into history.  One could only visit or share the single “news page” and see a view of new to old items.

With this new release, each news item has available its own permanent link which can be used on third-party sites or marketing materials – taking your visitor directly to that content without having to find it in the list no matter how old it becomes.

Additionally each item has a set of social network sharing buttons to allow you and your visitors to easily share that content to their favourite networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Pintrest, Digg, etc.

For an example of this in action, visit http://www.waddesdonhall.org.uk/news/dung_beatles_fundraiser_dec_2015/ which is powered by the latest iBizify.net Web Platform.

A news item on Waddesdon Hall's with social sharing enabled

This may be the single most noticeable change on your website following the upgrade.  For this reason, we are offering every iBizify.net Web Platform customer a free one-to-one online meeting to demonstrate how to make best use of these features.  If you would like to register for this, please get in touch to book your slot,

Improved intrusion, security, form spam prevention, error handling and more

The iBizify.net Web Platform has always monitored every website for unusual usage behaviour, intrusion detection and recording if, when and how things go wrong.  If even one of your customers is having a technical problem with your site, reports are generated and handled by iBizify.net if required.

Form spam protection – when “junk” is sent automatically via your site’s contact form - prevents unsolicited messages from making their way to your inbox.  This is all done without annoying “CAPTCHA type in the code” or silly questions being asked of your customer.

This new release improves all of the above features by using intelligence from all sites together to improve the detection rates overall.  Previously, each site used only their own data, so spam to one site would not necessarily be prevented on another.

Please note that the previous manual monthly testing process has now ceased.  As technology has improved and we have had over a year of experiencing no manual failures this process has been deemed unnecessary.  However, rest assured that in addition to the above measures, there are numerous external testing processes that happen every fifteen minutes from numerous locations around the world to detect any problems.  Your site is safe with iBizify.net!

Automatic updates

All sites now run on one central code-base.  This means that future updates will be delivered to your site more quickly.  Any bug fixes or new features will be delivered to all customers simultaneously.  Previously each site was upgraded individually.

And more!

  • Vastly improved site performance
  • Improved support for a wider range of web browsers
  • Support for Windows 10 and the Microsoft Edge browser
  • Support for the production and editing of user-defined tables within content

How do I get the upgrade?

If you are an iBizify.net Web Platform (iMakeMe) customer - you don’t need to do anything.  This is all provided as part of your subscription service.

Whilst this new release introduces automatic updates, the upgrade to this new release will be a manual one.  Each site will be upgraded in a phased manner and we will get in touch with you once the process is complete.  If you have any questions that would also be an ideal time to raise them.

Is there anything else we can do for you?

You may consider it time to review your website.  Perhaps you’d like to add new features or have a redesign.  With the iBizify.net Web Platform, your site is not limited to content-only.  You may want to introduce registration or customer information management for example.  The possibilities are endless.

Do get in touch to have a chat about the possibilities or with any queries you may have.

Out with the old and in with the new

You probably already know that iBizify.net is all about making business simpler by making best use of the latest technology to deliver great web, internet, cloud, mobile and business productivity experiences. However, we believe the best ideas start at home, so we are always working at ways of simplifying our very own business and the products and services that we offer.

Over the last year iBizify.net has been working hard to simplify our offering and also rebranding to modernise and bring our image in line with our very ethos, and I believe our new logo reflects that sentiment.

The old and the new iBizify.net logo

The new Site Editor replaces iMakeMe – coming August 2014

For our website customers, a key part of these new changes concern our online Site Editor (formally known as iMakeMe).

The Site Editor allows our customers to quickly and easily do their day-to-day content edits with ease. Changes can be made in a few clicks in less than thirty seconds. More involved content or design changes are handled by iBizify.net within the service package. The service even keeps all your content in sync between mobile and widescreen sites, and handles all of the formatting for you. You can just focus on your content.

A simplified name

The "Site Editor" is the new name for what used to be called iMakeMe. If you have any custom iMakeMe web apps, these will now be simply referred to as "Web Apps" and will continue to work just as they do today. We believe this change delivers better clarity of purpose. The iMakeMe name is essentially a legacy left over from years ago when the tool was aimed at individuals. iMakeMe has evolved and became a business tool but its name remained – until now!

A new look

The new Site Editor has been overhauled with a more modern, simpler design that falls in line with iBizify.net's new branding.

Huge performance increases

The new Site Editor intelligently manages, delivers, monitors and secures websites that are built and serviced by iBizify.net.

We are pleased to say that websites built on this new system will perform at least 10x faster than before. Existing sites will also see this benefit over time as they are upgraded in coming months.

Coupled with iBizify.net's awesome dedicated server hosting, the new changes will mean that sites will load faster than ever and will be able to handle far more traffic.

Better compatibility

The new Site Editor has been improved to work better with a broader range of modern browsers to improve accessibility.

Please note that some older browsers, including Microsoft Internet Explorer 8 and prior will no longer be supported. We recommend you upgrade to the latest version (currently version 11) or try an alternative such as Mozilla Firefox.

Don't worry – it's all still there

You will likely be pleased to know that the new Site Editor has been designed to operate almost identically to its predecessor so you won't have to learn new tricks.

An easier way to find your stuff

If you haven't found it already – the iBizify.net site has a new Client area. Just visit our website at https://ibizify.net and tap the Client area tile on the home page. You can also go straight there by going to https://ibizify.net/client/

In the Client area you can get quick access to your iBizify.net services, such as Microsoft Office 365, standard email, web apps and more.

Whilst the old addresses for the web apps and the Site Editor (iMakeMe) will still work perfectly well, you can now quickly access these by visiting http://apps.ibizify.net

How to How to?

The new Client area also includes a new "How to…" section. If certain questions come up regularly we will document the solution and add it to this section. Currently there are documents on how to use the Site Editor, configure email and more.

Need any help?

We hope you will love the new changes at iBizify.net. Of course as ever if you have any queries or need assistance, do email support@ibizify.net or call us on 01296 252 010.

Office 365 small business plans changes – simplified!

Microsoft have recently announced changes to the Office 365 Small Business and Midsize plans that will result in new benefits for small business users and cost savings to those currently on the Midsize plan.

Office 365 has a variety of plans from those aimed at individuals, families, small businesses through to huge enterprise solutions. Microsoft's aim in changing the small business plans is to simplify these options and give access to more benefits at a lower price point.

These changes will be introduced from October 2014. If you are a small or midsize business with less than 300 users, are using Office 365 or thinking about doing so, then read on to understand the changes.

For brevity references to OneDrive below all refer to "OneDrive for Business" – not to be confused with "OneDrive" [consumer edition!]

New flexibility

Once the new plans are introduced, it will then be possible to "mix and match" plans for different users. Previously, one had to choose a single plan family for the whole organisation, for example all Small Business, all Midsize or all Enterprise. As much as these changes largely do not affect Enterprise customers, there may be some cost savings for those customers by making use of this new flexibility.

I am planning to sign up for Office 365 – which plan should I chose?

There are a whole host of factors to consider when deciding on which Office 365 plan to choose and due to the nature of a cloud service, these factors can change regularly. For this reason, iBizify.net offers a cloud review service to discover your business needs and provide a recommendation. Visit https://ibizify.net/cloud to find out more.

The new changes do make these decisions easier. For most of our clients, Business Premium would be the natural choice but there may be cases where a mix of the new business plans may provide a better benefit / cost ratio.

I am an existing Office 365 customer – what do I need to do?

The great news is – you don't need to do anything right away. Microsoft recommend seeing your existing subscription term through (for most customers, this is an annual subscription). You will be able to choose your new path upon your subscription renewal (probably in 2015). A typical choice at that point would be as follows:

If you make use of Access databases within your subscription or hold Lync meetings there are other changes coming that you should be aware of.  Contact us for more information.

We strongly recommend reviewing your business needs at this point to discover the best benefits at the lowest price point. iBizify.net can help with a cloud review. Visit https://ibizify.net/cloud to find out more.

The new .uk internet domain has arrived

Nominet – the authority of all internet domain names ending in .uk have today launched the new shorter .uk name. Previously it has only been possible to take a name ending in .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk.

Should I register or reserve a .uk domain name?

There are many who advocate having as many domain names as possible to capture more traffic and visits. Whilst it helps to have effective keywords in a domain name, what is far more important is the content behind those addresses. If content is irrelevant, poor quality or simply lacking, no number of domain names will deliver success on search engines.

You might simply want to register the .uk domain so that no-one else does. The good news is that to prevent folks from hijacking the .uk name of existing .co.uk addresses, all those with any existing Nominet name such as a .co.uk or .org.uk will automatically have the .uk name reserved for free until June 2019 after which time it will be offered to everyone. If you already share your .uk name with another organisation you should use the Nominet rights lookup tool to find out more. For example, you may be company.co.uk sharing with a charity that is at company.org.uk.

Finally, you may wish to register your .uk domain simply to offer a cleaner, shorter and simpler address for your visitors to use. The address will particularly look better in print than its longer counterpart. However, since many now find by search rather than tapping in full web addresses, this is not as important as it once was.

We suggest that there is no urgency for anyone to rush out and register their .uk domain, but if you have new domains to register for new businesses or projects then you should certainly consider the new shorter .uk domain as a possibility.

Find out more

Nominet have created a dedicated site that is very clearly laid out and explains the new additions and answers many questions. You can visit that site at:

http://www.dotuklaunch.uk/

What are ‘hits’? (web analytics and statistics)

In your web visitor statistics or analytics package you may see data referred to as 'Hits'. These are often quite excitingly high numbers but do not necessarily relate to the number of actual visitors to your site and for the most part – should be ignored.

Confused? Let's work out how a 'Hit' occurs….

Hits are a technical statistic typically used to calculate or report on web server load. They are not something that would typically be used in marketing or sales, even though many do as the numbers are big and it sounds good.

When a web page is loaded into the browser, first the 'page' is loaded (one hit) then its code (one or more hits) and style information (one or more hits), then images (one hit each) until the whole page is rendered. In short, one visit or page view can produce many hits.

For marketing and sales purposes, the only basic / core statistics typically of interest are Unique Visits and Pages (sometimes called page views or impressions).

Once I saw an episode of Dragon's Den in which the guy being grilled impressed the 'Dens by declaring his new site was getting 10,000 hits a day. Now, if I built a single page website with 10,000 images on it (perfectly possible) and then got one person to visit it – I could easily claim the same thing. The moral of the story? Ignore hits!

Here is a bit more info on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hit_(internet)
